When we think “wedding” in Australia, many of us imagine a beautiful outdoorsy wedding in the summer, because that’s what we’re used to attending ourselves.
But really, there are SO many reasons to buck the trend and tie the knot in the colder months. Although not the usual choice, winter weddings are becoming more and more popular for many brides and grooms. So why get hitched in winter?
1. You can make it cosy
With a winter wedding, feel free to go all out and really ramp up the winter wonderland theme. Think fluffy blankets for guests, roaring fires – even a bonfire if it’s not actually rainy – warming comfort food on the menu, mulled wine, you get the picture. The limit is your imagination and having your wedding in winter can open up all sorts of fun ideas.
2. No hot mess = less stress
With summer comes intense heat in most parts of Australia, and while some people love the idea of getting married in this, others simply do not deal very well in heat. If the thought of sweaty messes under dresses, makeup sliding all over the face, sunburn and photo squints make you shudder, a winter wedding is probably your vibe.
Additionally, given a winter wedding is typically going to take place inside anyway, there’s no stress about the elements or worrying about last-minute marquees and the likes. Your wedding can go on rain, hail, snow, storm, or shine.
3. Tropical honeymoon in the middle of winter
Prolong those endless summer feels with a tropical honeymoon smack bang in the middle of winter. It just sounds more appealing than having a tropical honeymoon in the middle of an already tropical summer, doesn’t it? Although international travel is out for now, if you’re WA-based consider a romantic stay up in Broome or if state borders allow it at the time, why not pop over to far north Queensland?
4. Gorgeous photos
Winter can make for some truly spectacular photos you wouldn’t necessarily be able to achieve in summer. Think rolling black clouds, thunderstorms, kissing in the rain – you get the picture!

Although most weddings are stunning no matter what month of the year they take place in, why not do something unique and give your guests something to talk about by having a cosy, romantic winter wedding that no one expects?

More services are likely to be less booked out in winter than warmer months, due to lower winter wedding demand. Wedding services like venues, floral design, makeup, hair and wedding singers are more likely to be available meaning you’ll most likely be able to hire the services you desire!
Wedding singers in particular book out fast during the hot months as summer weddings beckon guests outdoors to listen to gentle acoustic tunes on the warm summer breeze. But wedding singers at a winter wedding can be just as satisfying – think rich, velvety smooth voices by a roaring fireplace followed by an energizing sesh of feel-good songs on the d-floor (and no summer sweat, remember?).
